We weren’t the first to add an addition to the Glenn House. A room for a bathroom or closet was added in the early twentieth century, which later became a fire escape for the upstairs apartment. Concrete covered a large portion of the back yard and a sun porch was added to the back of the house. To be honest, it was a mess.

We envisioned the new addition would reflect our love for family gatherings, entertaining, and above all a cohesive balance between the old and the new. Before we could submit our permit drawings, we had to receive approval from the neighborhood and city design commission. The Glenn House is located in the Inman Park Historic District, which has specific regulations and guidelines to ensure the historic built environment and integrity of Inman Park’s historic homes are not altered in a way that would change the appearance of the neighborhood. Our architect, who lives next door in the historic George King House, now known as the King-Keith house, was a great resource during several neighborhood meetings, presentations, and submissions to the Atlanta Urban Design Commission.

This part of the project is far from finished but I am excited to share with you some progress photos as we begin to merge the new with the old!

Have a happy weekend!
